Tamborine Mountain Distillery has just created another World 1st for its Quandong & Gentian Bitters Liqueur by winning Gold at the ISW World Spirits Competition in Germany.
This will bring their International tally for 2010 to 9. In February; 2 Gold, 1 Silver in Austria. March; 1 Silver, 1 Bronze in America. April; 3 Gold Stars in Belgium. Bringing the overall total to an impressive 117 in the new millennium making TMD the most awarded Distillery & Liquor Brand in this decade in Australia. Out of 72 products that TMD manufacture, 53 have won International Awards, possibly a world record in the Liquor Industry.
Company Director Michael Ward said “ Being such a small family owned business makes it impossible to compete for volume, price etc, with the Multi National Giants (and who would want to anyway) so we have concentrated on High Quality, Premium Grade, Unique Packaging, Australian Grown and Unusual Natural Ingredients which markets niche areas.”
“Quandong Bitters was created after the cry out for a Maraschino type product. By holding a close relationship with mixologists and bartenders we’re given an insight as to what products the industry demands. Well known Brisbane Bartender Ryan Lane, spoke of the need for a Maraschino type Liqueur, popular for its bitter sweet characteristics. With European products generally dominating the shelves in cocktail bars, the gap for an Australian made product of this type lead to extensive research and the ultimate end result of a unique high quality and distinctly Australian flavoured product. Bitter for the significant component of Gentian and sweet for the juicy Australian Quandong Berry.”
“Quandongs are a Traditional Aussie Bush Tucker. They’re found in arid regions of Australia and have been an important source of food for the Aborigines. The fruit and trees are greatly valued for the versatility of their medicinal properties. The berries are high in vitamin c and add a beautiful fruitiness to this liqueur which balances perfectly with a bitterness from Gentian Root and Hyssop leaves and subtle hints of bitter almond from crushed Cherry pits.”
